Instruments
Your phone as an instrument
A phone already carries most of what a field station has. Through the MUPAS mobile portal it records them, with the time and place, and keeps them beside what you write.
What it records
- Motion — accelerometer and gyroscope.
- Magnetic field, and a magnetic-anomaly reading that compares the field with the phone's own baseline.
- Air pressure.
- Ambient light.
- Steps.
- A camera-based radiation reading — the phone's camera sensor, covered, counts the flashes that ionizing radiation leaves on it.
- Location — from the phone's GPS, rounded on the phone to about 110 metres before it is sent, so MUPAS never receives a finer position from the app.
Standard and Enhanced. With free membership the phone records on the Standard schedule, periodic readings. With a package it records on the Enhanced schedule, several times as often. Same sensors; only how often they are read differs. The magnetic-anomaly and camera-radiation readings are part of Enhanced.
What you see in the portal
The phone's sources as charts, on the same timeline as any other instrument you own.

Setting it up
Install the MUPAS mobile portal, sign in with your member account, and turn on the sensors you want.
The MUPAS mobile portal for Android releases in October.
What it does not do
- It records; it does not interpret.
- A phone's sensors are consumer parts. They are fine for change over time and not for absolute measurement.
- It records only while the app is allowed to run in the background.
Included with membership. No purchase.
